Reflecting on a canine romance

Love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love

This morning, my former neighbor Amy sent me this pic to tell me Chiquita and Miles were now both in heaven together. My shih tzu and her havanese were an item for many years. Chiquita had this strange sixth sense when it came to Miles. Normally, Chiquita was pretty tame in the mornings and would wait patiently for us to take our first walk. But on certain days, she would start jumping up and down when we were still in the elevator, so excited to get outside. She would pull on her leash when we were starting along the path and inevitably, there was Amy, walking Miles. He would sprint towards Chiquita and they would body slam and roll around the grass, kissing and licking each other. We used to arrange play dates for them so they could frolic in the dog park or in our respective apartments. Those two couldn't get enough of each other. Amy and her husband eventually moved away but Amy's mom lived nearby and took care of Miles so we still got to see him. Then Chiquita passed and I couldn't bear to walk around without her so I almost never saw Miles.

Having pets as an adult has given me a new perspective on love; it comes in so many different forms. I always thought that love between a man and a woman was different from love between friends, or pets but as Lin-Manuel Miranda eloquently put it, "Love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love, cannot be killed or swept aside." I'm glad Chiquita and Miles have each other now; together again.
